Preventive Conservation Workshop

Posted on: 31 May 2011

Kindly hosted by Brisbane City Archives, Moorooka

Saturday 14 May 2011

With support generously provided by Museum of Brisbane Heritage Officer, Deannah Vieth, Christine Ianna conducted a free one-day Preventive Conservation Workshop for volunteers at not-for-profit collection organisations who wanted to learn more about how to care for the better preservation of their objects.  The highly interactive workshop covered:

  • Principles of preventive conservation
  • Agents of deterioration
  • Spectrum of solutions
  • Disaster preparedness & planning
  • Object assessment

Participants had the opportunity to bring their own object along for advice and assessment. If the object was fragile or there was a risk it would be endangered or endanger other objects by travelling it to the workshop, participants were asked to bring a photograph of it instead. Christine Ianna, Conservator and passionate advocate of preventive conservation provided on the spot object condition assessment and  discussed  possible solutions for the object’s storage, display and treatment.

Support for costume sleeve using dacron and

acid free tissue loosely rolled and inserted into sleeve.

Supporting book on a polyester pillow protector filled with polystyrene  beads  and interleaving acid free tissue between textile samples.

Organisations received a kit of preventive conservation materials to take away, a folder of notes and a USB of additional resources to further their understanding of preventive conservation including:
