Christine Ianna recognised as Queensland Disaster Hero

Posted on: 22 June 2011

On Sunday of the long weekend, 12 June, M&GSQ’s Executive Director Rebekah Butler and I joined a throng of people at South Bank, Brisbane, for a special ceremony to recognise Queensland Disaster Heroes as part of Queensland Week. We were there to support Queensland conservator, Christine Ianna, as she received a commemorative medal for her outstanding initiative, commitment and service to safeguarding Queensland’s heritage during the recent disasters.

Christine is a Queensland representative of the Australian Institute for the Conservation of Cultural Material who, in December 2010, initiated Q-DIS – an online Queensland Disaster Information Network for Queensland’s collections sector. Q-DIS was launched at M&GSQ’s end-of-year networking event, Alert! Heritage Collections and Disaster.

Throughout the floods and Tropical Cyclone Yasi, Christine was a tireless volunteer for Q-DIS, connecting colleagues state-wide, providing updates on people and collections and expert practical advice on disaster preparedness, planning and recovery. Christine’s advice via Q-DIS and the media assisted many to salvage collection items and personal treasures.

M&GSQ congratulates Christine on her recognition.

Leave a reply if you’d like to comment on Q-DIS, tell us about anyone else in the sector who deserves to be recognised, or share your own experiences of the recent disasters.
