Anne Beetson, a successful applicant to M&GSQ’s pilot 2011 Mentorship, Exchange and Fellowship Program, has completed a successful Volunteer Internship with Cobb+Co Museum in Toowoomba. Anne is a volunteer at Leahy Historical House in Thargomindah.

Cobb+Co Museum is a campus of the Queensland Museum.

The Mentorship, Exchange and Fellowship Program is being offered again for 2012. Potential applicants must register with M&GSQ no later than 14 October 2011 – see the end of this article for details.

Anne discusses what she gained from her Internship:

I now have a renewed passion for museum practices, with which I hope to enthuse our volunteers. The Internship updated my knowledge of museum techniques – I learnt more advanced labelling techniques than I had previously been exposed to and I was able to put these techniques into practice within the Cobb+Co Museum. I was able to observe display techniques used in a range of museums, and could discuss problems relating to objects in our collection with a range of experts. This gave me several points of view to consider.

I learned about new products on the market and outlets for product supplies, and it gave me many new contacts within my area to call on.

The whole experience renewed my interest in museum projects. I will be able to put all my new skills into practice at our museum and pass on my skills to the other volunteers. I now hope to encourage a wider range of visitors to the museum.

The experience of my Volunteer Internship more than matched my expectations.

M&GSQ’s 2012 Mentorship, Exchange and Fellowship Program is open for applications. The Program is funded by Arts Queensland through the Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF). RADF is a joint Queensland Government and Local Government partnership to support local arts and culture. Go to the M&GSQ website, www.magsq.com.au for guidelines and application forms or contact M&GSQ on 1800 680 433 (freecall within Queensland).

Potential applicants must contact M&GSQ staff by 14 October 2011. Applications close on 9 December 2011.
