Vicki Warden, a successful recipient of M&GSQ’s pilot 2011 Mentorship, Exchange and Fellowship Program, has completed an International Fellowship in New Zealand. Vicki is Museum Development Coordinator | Museum Development Officer based at the Queensland Museum’s Resource Centre for Southern Inland Queensland in Toowoomba. Her placement was with National Services Te Paerangi (NSTP), Te Papa Tongarewa in Wellington, New Zealand.

Vicki shares her experiences of her International Fellowship:

What a fabulous opportunity to have two weeks away from all the daily operational duties to focus on how to do my job better and how to improve the service offered by the Museum Resource Centre Network.

During my placement at NSTP, I investigated alternative service delivery and management models, and I have already injected some of my findings directly into our new strategic plan. I was able to see ‘in action’ some of the ideas I had been mulling over for some time.  This has helped me to better formulate and expand those ideas that hopefully I will now be able to implement. It has also given me the confidence to dream bigger!

Alternative service delivery and management models were of particular interest to me, specifically the use of the web to deliver training programs and services across our vast State. As a result of my visit, I made four key recommendations to the Museum Resource Centre Network which have been approved, and our team is now working on how to implement them. Some of these recommendations relate to how we operate internally as a Network and others relate to how we communicate and deliver services externally to our clients.

If we can achieve these goals in the coming years, we will succeed in improving the efficiency and effectiveness of our operations and service delivery to the benefit of all our clients state-wide.

NSTP was the perfect match for my learning objectives, and it was a brilliant experience. My visit was definitely an exchange of knowledge, ideas and information rather than just a learning experience, and I believe a long lasting relationship has begun.

… and I learned the Haka, a Maori dance, and how to pronounce the Maori language – another week and I would have also learned a few songs.
